United India Insurance Company Limited launched the revised universal health insurance scheme with aim to provide better health expenses coverage to the below poverty line population.
Shri P.Chidambaram Hon`ble Minister of Finance ,Govt of India launched the Revised Universal Health Insurance scheme for BPL population with reduced premium and enhanced benefits at Karaikudi on Sunday 07.09.08 . The families of Shankarapuram village were issued the new health insurance policy . In the function held at held at L.Ct.L Palaniappa Chettiar memorial auditorium at Alagappa University. Shri K R Periya Karuppan, Hon' Minister for HR & CE, Government of Tamil nadu was present on the occasion.
Shri G Srinivasan, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, United India Insurance Company welcomed the gathering and highlighted its pioneering role in effectively implementing the BPL health insurance and other major social welfare schemes like Tsunami Bima Yojana, Micro insurance and rural asset insurance like cattle, huts, etc.
Mr.Chidambaram distributed the first policy to Thiru S.Mangudi, President of the panchayat and health cards to families present at function. Shankarapuram panchayath is the first panchayath in the country where all the BPL families are covered by Universal Health insurance scheme.
Shri Chidambaram during his address, exhorted them to utilise to the fullest the benefits of health insurance by understanding the simple guidelines by themselves . The premium is reasonably affordable which the BPL segment can make use of to avail the health coverage. He also highlighted the special benefits of the revised scheme as coverage for existing illnesses, maternity benefits, coverage for new born upto three months, extension of upper age limit to 70 years, loss of earnings protection to the self and spouse during hospitalisation. Mr. Chidamabram also declared the continued commitment and focus of the Government to the health needs of rural poor by various schemes already launched and highly enhanced budgetary commitments in the last two years.
